Thesis Prep 2 - Site/Program Fit
After discussing my site/program fit today, I am going to revisit the programmatic aspect of my thesis. I was originally going to have two programmatic elements, but it seems the second programmatic element is controversial (the birthing center). I am now leaning towards dropping the second programmatic aspect and just focusing on the hostel. This would enable me to focus more of the...

Thesis Prep 2 - Program Diagrams
During my consultation, we talked about trying to adjust the doctor’s office program to be more active during the same times as the hostel, so that there is the overlap and the presence of another programmatic space in use. I’ve also decided to use Boston’s abandoned underground Tremont street tunnel as my site.

Thesis Prep 2 - Updates + Site Criteria
Question: How can the fundamentals of surrealism, as manifested in filmmaking, be translated into a way of thinking about spatial experiences and architectural design?  Claim/Hypothesis: By using surrealist filmmaking techniques, architectural spaces will intertwine the real and the surreal, that is the physical and the mental, to the point where the user combines both realities into one. (Both...

Thesis Abstract
My thesis idea is to translate the fundamentals of two-dimensional surrealist art into a three-dimensional spatial experience in architecture by analyzing surrealist film, photography and literature.  The philosophies of surrealism deal with irrational juxtaposition, symbolism, exaggeration, and automatism, which can hopefully be translated into architectural ideas. My goal is to create a space...

Thesis Prep 2 - Visual Abstract
This image is showing the idea of my thesis question, represented by surrealism in many different creatives mediums - film, literature, art, sculpture, installations, and architecture. There are references to Rene Magritte’s Personal Values (art), Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali’s Un Chien Andalou (film), Frederick Kiesler’s Endless House (installation), Le Corbusier and Pierre...

Thesis Prep 2 - Collages
For the second round of collages, I reinterpreted the term “passage of time”. The idea with this new collage is that you can see what the building is now, but also what the building used to be. The glimpses into the past represent your memory of the place. (The building used in this image is the Old Corner Bookstore in Boston). The other collage I decided to work on was with the...

Ice Typography
“A personal typographic experiment using ice. The scope of personal typography experimentation is incredibly large. It’s anything you haven’t done before. The scope of experimental typography that will advance the field of Graphic Design and Typography is very small.” - Cameron Zotter

Review of Guy Maddin’s film “My Winnipeg”. When I first saw the movie, I don’t think I really understood it fully so I’d actually like to view it again. It’s a “docu-fantasy”,  where the narrator/director of the film is “stuck” in Winnipeg, where he’s lived all his life, and he tries to “film his way out”. There are many...

Thesis Prep 2 - Collages
First pass at creating collages based on words. Pretty successful but I need to work more in 3D/models to express ideas.  Passage of Time:  Seeing a building from many different points in time (night, day, rain, snow, fall, summer), plus the movie names changed when each photo was taken! My least favorite/successful; trying to show how I believe the passage of time is felt through memories and...

One of my favorite directors, David Lynch, recently designed this night club in Paris. I don’t know if there are really any words to accurately describe David Lynch (well, “weird” probably works). You’d have to see a few of his movies first (I’d recommend Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart), watch some Twin Peaks, and then go to youtube and listen to some of his talks....

Derrida…asked me why architects should be interested in his work, since, he observed, “deconstruction is anti-form, anti-hierarchy, anti-structure-the opposite of all that architecture stands for.” “Precisely for this reason,” was my response.   -Bernard Tschumi

I LOVE Zaha Hadid’s paintings - for the colors, geometries, lines, intersections, angles, the abstraction of architecture/buildings/urban views of cities. I think it’s a perfect combination of what I like in paintings. I don’t know how I feel about her architecture because I have never been in any buildings she’s designed. I am curious though - I’d hope it would...

I love houses that can transform. This is a really neat idea for areas that experience hurricanes often (Thanks to Irene, it’s getting me thinking about that stuff!).

Swiss Artist Felice Varini uses perspective, geometry, and colors to create his works, which appear to be floating shapes in front of your eyes! When you move out of the specific perspective point, it becomes clear that this art is not easy to create. Check out all the nooks and crannies he has to paint, and sometimes they are really far apart!

What you see here is a ‘mobile homeless shelter’ for homeless people. With new design ideas, critique always follows. This is a nice idea in theory… but there are some major flaws. First, why is there a need for this? Homelessness isn’t something that people should be buying into - they should be trying to get a job and get a home. Second, security. There is no way for a...
